Risk-reducing surgery for BRCA carriers
Very large drop in breast cancer in high-risk women.
What studies found
In cohort studies reviewed by the U.S. Task Force (2019), removing both breasts was linked to 90% to 100% lower breast cancer incidence and 81% to 100% lower breast cancer death in high-risk women and BRCA carriers. Removing the ovaries was linked to 81% to 100% lower ovarian cancer incidence.
The catch
These are cohort studies, not randomized trials, and surgery doesn't guarantee cancer won't develop.
What to do
A decision to make with a genetic counselor and surgeon, after weighing screening and medicines as alternatives.
