Healthy eating pattern after breast cancer

May help overall survival; not shown to prevent recurrence.

Side-effect supportYou can do this

What studies found

The American Cancer Society's 2022 guideline for survivors says a healthful diet after diagnosis can improve overall survival, and diets high in red meat, processed meat and sweets are linked to higher risk of death. Limited data suggest soy foods after diagnosis may lower recurrence risk.

The catch

There isn't enough evidence that healthy eating reduces recurrence. In the WHEL trial, a diet very high in vegetables and fruit did not lower recurrence.

What to do

Build meals around vegetables, fruit, whole grains and beans, and limit red and processed meat and sweets.
